Xing Yan Dong 3rd in Tour de Langkawi ! PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 11 February 2008
Chinese Xing Yan Dong from the Trek - Marco Polo Cycling Team became 3rd in today's stage in the Tour de Langkawi. He was present in a 5 men break-away in the longest stage of 209 km of the Tour. The Tour de Langkawi is one of the most important stage races in the spring season with many of the world's best cycling teams at the start. Today's stage started the first hour with an average speed of over 50 kmph and 44,5 kmph over the total distance of 209 km.
The 5 men break stayed away for 130 km and Korean Jae Won Lee could get away to take the stage victory. Sprinter Anuar Manan took second and Xing Yan Dong third.
It is a great result for Chinese Xing Yan Dong and the prove of his talent and good work that he did the past three years on the Marco Polo Cycling Team. He started cycling after he had injuries from athletics and the now 23 year old Xing Yan Dong has the strong ambition to make it in cycling sports and to race one day in the Tour de France.

New Marco Polo Madones arrived!! PDF Print E-mail

While the team was training in Malaysia, Trek was working hard to get the new team bikes ready before the Tour de Langkawi. Finally they had staff flying from the USA to bring the frame sets to China and build the bikes up there, then hand-carry the complete bikes to Malaysia.

The riders just love the new bikes!! Jai Crawford is totally happy: "the bikes are super-low weight and all action"; Sergey and Fuyu just love the way the bike moves and the stifness of the frames.

The bikes came with SRAM Force groups, with some SRAM Red groups to come later this season, of course all additional parts are from Bontrager. There are Bontrager XXXL and Bontrager Aeolus carbon race wheels, tires/tubulars are from Vredestein, bottles from Tacx, pedals from Keywin, Polar computers and the riders wear Tineli uniforms, Giro helmets, Lake shoes and Oakley glasses. Powerbar gives energy to the team, while Wieler Magazine and Eurosport Asia are official media partners.

Team ready for Langkawi PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 01 February 2008

After training in Malaysia for a few weeks, the Trek – Marco Polo Cycling Team is totally on schedule for the first big target of the season. Everybody recovered well from Tour of Malaysia and pickep up training again. Sergey’s knee healed well, so he is ready to take on the sprinters of the big teams!

Trainer Edwin Achterberg was with the team for almost two weeks and was very impressed by the high level. The team rode up Genting Highlands (taken out of the race now) and also Fraser Hill (its replacement). Especially Jai Crawford was very disappointed with the replacement, as he finished 5th in last years queens stage that finished on Genting. Also a lot of speed work is being done, as the whole race is as good as flat.

The team will be lead by team director Michael Carter. He will have the guys race very aggressively, be in all the breaks and hope for successes in bunch sprints by the tandem Sergey Kudentsov and Fuyu Li.
Most of the team riders can do a good ride on Fraser Hill, so could have chances for a good GC if they manage to be in the right breaks during the whole race.

The Trek - Marco Polo Cycling Team for the Tour de Langkawi team:
Jai Crawford (Australia)
Sergey Kudentsov (Russia)
Fuyu Li (China)
Loh Sea Keong (Malaysia)
Ken Onodera (Japan)
Xing Yan Dong (China)

Successful warming up. PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 14 January 2008

The Trek-Marco Polo Team had a great warming up for the season in Jelajah Malaysia. With Fuyu Li winning the first stage, leading for a few days and Sergey Kudentsov getting 2nd and 3rd in stages as well, the team scored well in the first race.

More importantly, the integration of new team members went well, the team cooperated really good to support their leaders and the younger riders showed promising performances!

Liu Yilin finished a surprising 14th in GC and had a top ten result in the queens stage up Genting Highlands. Loh Sea Keong worked very hard for the team, was in the breakaway when he was free to go and was the 3rd Malaysian rider in GC. Ken Onodera integrated well, was important in the first stage and just needs a bit more endurance, which is normal for mountainbikers when coming to the road. Xing Yan Dong had a bit of a disappointing ride up Genting, but had been working for the team extremely hard. Sergey crashed out of the race (with 3 chances left to win a stage…), his knee looked bad, but seems to recover well.

Jai Crawford finished 21st in the Australian road race; not as good as we were hoping. Leon van Bon is 6th in the Bremen 6 Day track race.

Over the next three weeks, the team will stay in a resort close to Genting Highlands and train well in preparation for the first real goal of the season: Tour de Langkawi.

The Trek-Marco Polo riders showed a good ride up the famous Genting Highlands climb; one of the toughest climbs in races on the Asia Tour calandar.
Fuyu Li was a bit disappointed, because he did not have the legs he was hoping for. A top 5 result was what was hoped for, Fuyu finished 14th, still a decent result, bringing him to 11th spot on GC.
