Discovery Channel Marco Polo Team ready for Tour de Langkawi PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 01 February 2007

After a good month of racing and training in Malaysia and Thailand the Discovery Channel Marco Polo Team is ready for the Tour de Langkawi.

Some of the riders have been racing from Christmas, when they raced in the Tour of South China Sea. Others joined for training in Malaysia and raced the Jelajah Tour of Malaysia. After that 11 riders from the team trained together in Malaysia. Now 5 riders just finished the Tour of Siam in Thailand. With 3 riders in the first 15 of the GC and two second places and one third in stages and a second place in the General Team Classification for the Discovery Channel Marco Polo Team, this was a good preparation for Langkawi.

Selected for the Tour de Langkawi are: Russian sprinter Sergey Kudentsov, Chinese Xing Yan Dong, Dutch riders Pol Nabben and Thijs Zonneveld and racing a home race Loh Sea Keong from Malaysia. Jamsran Ulzii-Orshikh from Mongolia had to travel back home and will be replaced with Yu Tong from China, arriving tomorrow from Beijing.

The team is in great shape with 7 podium placings in UCI races the first month of this year. Only the victory is still missing, hopefully this will come in the Langkawi.

Strong riding in Stage 4 Siam PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 24 January 2007

Stage 4 in the Tour of Siam was a very hard mountain stage of 185 km in (of course) hot weather. In the start of the first climb, there was a break-away group. Ghader Mizabani and leader in the mountain classification, Jay Crawford from Giant Asia and Azad University rider Sirous Hashemzadeh, decided that it was time to go. They had a very strong ride and took almost 6 minutes on the peloton that was controlled by the Nippo Meitan team from tour leader Koji Fukushima. At the 3rd climb of the day the peloton fell apart with most of the favourites still together. From the Discovery Channel Marco Polo Team we had 3 riders present, Thijs Zonneveld, Xing Yan Dong and Pol Nabben.

Mizabani and Crawford made it all the way to the finish. And Pol Nabben could still get away from the second group to take the 3rd place in the stage.

5th for Thijs Zonneveld PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 23 January 2007

Thijs Zonneveld showed himself at the first opportunity that he had as a climber this year: in the second stage uphill finish of Tour of Siam.
In the mountain stage of Jelajah Malaysia, Thijs had dropped out sick, so he had missed out on that one. This time he was right there, where the action was.

Koji Fukushima did his thing: escape early; long breakaway. He reached the finish alone. In the group behind Pol Nabben and Oggi sacrificed themselves to make sure Koji did not win minutes. Thijs got fifth and is 10th in GC now, just around one minute behind yellow jersey Koji Fukushima.
